Although a main line service between Huddersfield, Penistone and Sheffield is still open albeit now routed via Barnsley rather than direct between Penistone and Sheffield the Holmfirth Branch closed to passengers on 2 November 1. THE MAIN LINE AND ITS CONNECTIONSIt is worth summarising the early history of the railway between Huddersfield and Penistone, particularly because the Holmfirth Branch was built and opened concurrently with it, and for many decades the branch contributed valuable goods and passenger traffic to the main line. The Huddersfield Penistone line provides a fascinating journey through a spectacular landscape and is itself an engineering masterpiece. At Denby Dale a substantial timber trestle viaduct was built, apparently prompted by a strike among the stonemasons. Even before the line opened this structure was severely damaged in a gale on 2. January 1. 84. 7 when half of the supports were blown down this incident confirmed local peoples fears that a similar structure being built at Mytholmbridge on the Holmfirth Branch might not be safe.
